Training Notes, 020108

Star~66
The picture is of Star on a beginner teeter. She did very well at this exercise with WPR Heather.
Star failed an eval at daycare this week. The evaluator said Star was “over the top” with the other dogs, showing teeth and grabbing the other dogs by the neck, although she did seem to want to play with them. She played with Draco several weeks ago and was submissive, urinating on the floor when he engaged with her. She did better when I brought out a ball and he ignored her, she was able to run with him without engaging directly. When I took the ball away again Star engaged with Draco. She showed teeth but didn’t bite him, he didn't react and they played together for a short time.
Paul worked with her this week, AJ was sick most of the week. He notes that she does very well when distractions are limited to things she knows, but not so well when there are new ones, specifically new dogs and new people. She whines LOUDLY when she wants something and is ignored, but will quiet when told to.

Chesty~62
Chesty has been cleared by Paula to have his hips x-rayed so Mike will schedule that.
Mark worked with Chesty again this week, all week. He is still a very challenging pup to handle, and at times continues to need reminders for the most elementary commands. Mark notes that Chesty does not acknowledge leash corrections and will immediately return to inappropriate behavior without any sort of submissive reaction unless he’s physically rolled over. Mark worked him in class, then AJ worked him. Chesty responds better to AJ perhaps because he’s bonded to him, but last week worked better for Mark. Mark says that he is very inconsistent in his behavior~one day he’ll be attentive and great, the next he’s sniffing the ground and extremely distracted. Mark is still unable to call him out of an interaction with another dog.

Chesty is back with AJ this week, Star is back with Mark.

General~59
General continues to do well, he is still on a Triple Crown collar for pulling but is much better with the Gentle Leader on. Mike reports that General gets sad or depressed while wearing it, says he cannot get him to complete certain tasks. However, WPR Lisa says that after General's initial moments of "freezing" to put on his cape and GL, he will do all commands, including tug. The picture is of "General Fearless" on the Buja board.

This week at training the WPRs did group sits and downs for 1 and 3 minutes respectively. In attendance were Star, General and Skydog. They worked on attention heeling with the distraction of another dog playing, and worked with agility equipment including the wobble board, the mini-teeter, the pause table, a 10 inch jump, and the hoop jump set at 6 inches. All of the dogs were great and accomplished all of the stations. Skydog didn't like the teeter, but his WPR was able to get him over it using bait and making a game out of it.
I invited all of our prospective WPR familes to training so that they could see what it's like to be a part of this program. We had two prospective WPR familes come to our training last Friday and visit with/ask questions of the other WPR families and get to meet our puppies. The next step for them would be to continue to come to training and attend an orientation at NEADS.
I look forward to having them be a part our program!
