Training Notes, 032108

Star~68
General~64
Jewel~34
Roger~28

Star~She has apparently injured her right hip, possibly on a fall from being told to "up" and trying to jump onto a desk. It appears to be a sort tissue injury and will be monitored closely this week. Mark is working on reliable retrieve with all items. I am bringing in cell phone, keys, etc. for her to fetch. Her WPR was asked to start coming to group class every Saturday and also has asssigned field trips every weekend to grocery store and post office. Star seems to be a little shy in a crowd, hence the group training. We will work on that during field trips in April as well.

General~General is doing well, went to Boston for a field trip this week, these are photos of his trip~one on the T and one in a park posing with a statue. He is having anal gland issues so we've started putting a teaspoon of canned pumpkin into his food to see if this will help.

Jewel~ (see pic, above) She is fleeing from her handler if she is stressed in a situation~runs back to her crate. She will be taking short in-facility field trips with the Dep. Superintendant as well as the other handlers. She has been on two visits with Mike and Mark. The first was her first week there and the visiting room was crazy, very loud. She didn't do well, tried to flee. The second was last week with Mark, the room was quieter and she was fine, no problems. I will put that first bad reaction down to it being her first week. She seems to be a dog that is a bit tentative when she first sees something that is unfamiliar, but the second time she sees it it's old hat and she has no reaction at all. With WPR Dawn she came to drill team practice at 9am on Saturday (for her other dog), stayed for a drop-in obedience class where she fit right in, no problems. Then they stayed for puppy kindergarten and Jewel played with the other puppies very well~she liked the little husky puppy best. She visited with other dogs and people this weekend with no problems.

Roger~Holy cow, what a turn around! Roger is still slightly over-confident (read: cocky) but was a doll when twice visiting a nursing care facility over the weekend. His handler as well as his WPR have both noted that he is inexhaustable and still grabbing pant legs occasionally, but after a good run/work in the morning he's a great pup to be around. He got scared by my GSD who schooled him in proper greeting behavior (not jumping onto the big dog's head) but recovered quickly. He has mastered the stairs this week (up and down) and is having very few accidents, (mostly handler error). He enjoyed puppy kindergarten class and played with alot of the other puppies. He has an interview with Happy Tails daycare on Friday.
