Training Log 050409

Saturday training was a huge group~almost 20 dogs. What a great opportunity for our puppies to work in a large group! We worked on heeling, proper placement in the sit at heel and down at heel, faster sits and downs, attention to handler with dogs walking toward and around, recall out of down stay with handler out of sight and moving in a crowd. The dogs also practiced SAY HELLO with 4 new strangers so I could critique.

Sunday was a dog walk to benefit Douglas Dog Orphans. Thank you to Sutton, Sally, Deacon, Daisy and our CCI friends Tobiah and Kent for joining us! There were over 100 dogs there, tons of little dogs, dogs in costume, and a person in a dog costume. Lots of food, kids, loud music also. The dogs got to try out some agility equipment (jumps, tunnel, weaves, tire jump).

Deacon~He is exceptional in the facility with Scott, but very rude with a new or weak handler, either in or out of PCC. Lisa R. took him to training on Saturday where he earned a 3.0 mm prong collar. He was inattentive, slow with his commands, needed second commands for simple things like down and stand. He then earned the 2.5mm when we met at the River Bend Farm dog walk on Sunday~sniffy, pulling, inattentive and seeking out other dogs.
This from the dog that I had taken the Triple Crown off of weeks ago because he was too sensitive to correction from Scott. We will just need to work more on his manners being the rule rather than the exception anywhere he goes and remember that he's still under a year old. I look forward to taking him out with me soon.

Sally~She is sweet and silly and outgoing but even at just under 5 months appears to understand that when she is working, it's business. This is not to say that she didn't have a difficult time in the grass on Sunday, but her DOWN STAYs were good except when Deacon was too close to her. She said hello to the person in the dog costume without a problem. She was excellent in class on Friday and Saturday. Her handler, Parise, is learning quickly from the others in our group.
